A történet 117 évvel ezelőtt kezdődött – ekkor fedezte fel a rákosi viperát a híres természettudós, Herman Ottó, miközben kutyáival sétált a Rákos-mezőn. Ez a hungarikum akkoriban szép számmal élt hazánkban, ma már azonban – alig 500 példányával – Európa legveszélyeztetettebb mérgeskígyójának minősül. Minden bizonnyal régen felkerült volna az ember által kipusztított fajok hosszú listájára, ha nem figyel fel rájuk Péchy Tamás, a Magyar Madártani és Természetvédelmi Egyesület munkatársa. A film a faj megmentésének nehézségeiről, a sikerekről, a teendőkről és magáról a rákosi viperáról szól.
The aristocrat of the snakes – the Hungarian meadow viper
The story started 117 years ago, when walking his dogs, the renowned Hungarian naturalist, Ottó Herman discovered the Hungarian meadow viper. This Hungaricum was widely occurred in the country that time. Today, however, with less then 500 specimens it is the most endangered venomous snake of Europe. It definitely would have joined the long list of species exterminated by us, if Tamás Péchy, a devoted conservationist from the BirdLife Hungary wouldn’t have realized that we needed to do something. The film tells about the difficulties, successes, things left to be done, and about the Hungarian meadow viper itself.
